113/366 | Mama Wood Duck

This morning I checked on the Monarch that was struggling the night before and found that she was gone (see previous post). I suspect the frog lurking in the bed had a late night snack. Circle of life, I suppose.

Today I drove to LSU Lakes. I noticed several Wood Duck families swimming in the duckweed. Yes, they have been reproducing like crazy! The photo shown below is a female with two of her brood of seven. I also noted several juvenile ducks swimming together.

Wood Ducks eat seeds, fruits, insects and other arthropods, but they are mainly vegetarian. Since there's so much duckweed in this part of the lake, I'm sure that's why they're hanging out here. It doesn't make for the prettiest picture; however, with all the foot traffic they are less skittish than most Wood Ducks.
