These beautiful irises came to my attention last week during my daily walk. It was necessary to trespass a stranger's yard just a few steps to grab some quick shots with my phone. Reddit's "What's This Plant" subreddit helped me identify it as the Dietes Grandiflora, also known as the Fairy Iris. The fragile white petals resemble fairy wings that have a tendency to disappear overnight. This rhizomatous plant is native to eastern and southern Africa. The flowers last about 3 days, but are quickly replaced by new ones. It blooms nearly year-round in mild climates. This is the most unusual iris I've ever seen. Must. Have.
